IF you are talking about the Ateneo Lady Eagles, it is impossible for one to not mention or even just know Gretchen Ho. Known for her running attacks, this Lady Eagle is probably the Blue and White’s most popular player, with around 100,000 likes in her Facebook page and 30,000 followers on Twitter.
The senior told us in an interview that before volleyball, she actually played basketball first (In fact, she even dreamt of becoming a professional basketball player when she was a kid!).
However, since her grade school had no basketball team, she chose to play volleyball and from then on, due to the coaching efforts of Coach Vilet Ponce de Leon in high school and Coach Roger Gorayeb in college, she has become one of the most reliable players in the Philippine varsity circuit.
Her versatility and quickness is actually one of the factors why she was recruited to play for the RP Youth Team back in high school and also why she is a vital cog for Ateneo. She can play both the open hitter and the middle blocker positions well.
When asked what she is feeling for the upcoming UAAP season now that the pressure is on them to win, she said “I am really, really excited for the whole team. I also think it is our year. It’s now or never and I’m ready to give it all I’ve got.”
Ho also thinks that La Salle is still the toughest team they will go up against in the upcoming UAAP and their goal is to reverse the outcome of last year’s Finals.
“Having a lot of heart gives you that drive to push yourself even when the tough gets going,” she shared, believing that with heart, the group can go all the way this year.
Although famous, she still keeps her feet on the ground and wants the fans to know that she is an approachable person. She also mentions that volleyball and these fans are the reasons why she has everything she has today and for that, she is deeply grateful.
