MYLA Pablo dished out a career game to lead National University to a four-set triumph over still-winless University of the East to grab solo second in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The sophomore battered the Lady Warriors’ defense with a career-high 22 points as the Lady Bulldogs bucked the injury of starting setter Ivy Perez to pull off the 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, 25-18 win.
Pablo nailed 16 hits and scored off six aces to lead NU in scoring while Dindin Santiago and Cai Nepomuceno played their roles to the hilt with 17 and 15 markers, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs went out of the gates with guns blazing, attacking UE’s front line with reckless abandon and taking the first set easily, 25-13.
But an erratic second set allowed the Lady Warriors to tie it after a 25-22 set triumph, before Perez dislocated her right thumb while trying to block an attempt by Sarina Faith Bulan.
The Sampaloc-based squad then breezed through their overmatched foes in the last two sets, with Kuki Salibad doing a solid job orchestrating their offense and Pablo, Nepomuceno and Santiago drilling almost everything they hit.
NU had 42 hits, nine blocks and 17 aces, but still committed an atrocious 37 errors in just three sets.
Bulan paced UE for the third straight time with 11 points while team captain Leuseht Dawis had seven.
NU: Pablo 22, Santiago 17, Nepomuceno 15, Urdas 9, Dadang 4, Perez 1
UE: Bulan 11, Dawis 7, Nebrida 6, Manansala 6, Miralles 2, Masangkay 1
