The differently coloured shirt makes a libero easy to spot. The exchange at the sideline can be less obvious: a libero replacement follows its own process rather than simply using the team’s ordinary substitution allowance.
This explanation refers to the FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2025–2028, particularly Rule 19. Local competitions may apply different regulations, so check the rules governing the match you are watching or playing.
Watch the exchange, not just the shirt
Under those rules, libero replacements are not counted as regular substitutions. They are unlimited, but normally require a completed rally between two replacements, with specified exceptions. Unlimited therefore does not mean that players can exchange freely at any moment.
The rules also define who may replace the acting libero and require exchanges through the libero replacement zone. Timing is tied to the ball being out of play and the service authorisation, with particular provisions for the beginning of a set and late exchanges.
Use a simple viewing exercise
During a match, note the regular player’s number when the libero enters, then watch for the corresponding return. Record the rally between exchanges rather than trying to track everything from the team shirt colours alone.
For an illustrative observation, a viewer might see the libero leave after a completed rally and a regular player return through the designated area. The useful question is whether the correct players, timing and procedure fit the applicable rule, not whether the scorer has used another ordinary substitution.
Leave disputed cases to the complete rule
Exceptional replacements, injuries, re-designation and late procedures involve additional details. A short explanation cannot replace the full rulebook or the officials’ application of it. Consult the relevant provisions before treating a clip as evidence of an error.
Understanding the separate process makes the rotation easier to follow. The libero’s shirt identifies a role; the replacement rules explain how that role moves into and out of the action.
